What would our landscape look like without water?

We don't want to know, but we're pretty close to that reality. You have the power to make a difference, though. At Wildcat Bluff Nature Center, our landscape rehydration project with Ogallala Life is working to bring water back to our landscape. Ensuring the people, wildlife, and native plants that belong here can stay and thrive for years to come.

The vision of water flowing through West Amarillo Creek was once a reality. A focal point of Wildcat Bluff's landscape, the creek was a community space where fishing, dancing, laughter, and life thrived. Dried up decades ago, these fond memories live on in locals who are now grandparents or great-grandparents, but we believe that those memories can come to life once again.

Through the creation of natural structures using brush and mesquite branches, our project is slowing water down when rain comes along, rather than rushing over dry and cracked land and disappearing from our ecosystem. When we slow the water down, our landscape absorbs it and rehydrates the soil - helping contribute to groundwater retention and the recharging of another limited resource: the Ogallala Aquifer. We've already seen the positive effects of more frequent wildlife sightings, greener landscapes, and characteristics of a healthy High Plains.

Wildcat Bluff Nature Center has been honored as a 2025 Conservation Wrangler by Texan By Nature, founded by former First Lady Laura Bush. This recognition acknowledges the impact this project has, and how a little help can go a long way:

  • 2+ miles of restoration activities on Upper West Amarillo Creek

  • 2+ acres of demonstration gardens for public education

  • 50% increase in stormwater retention through slow and spread techniques

  • 2,300+ students connected to the natural environment through educational programming

Your support will help rehydrate the High Plains and support access to Wildcat Bluff Nature Center as a living laboratory as we work to bring water back to the West Amarillo Creek and ensure it's here for generations to come.

Who We Are

Friends and Supporters:

Wildcat Bluff Nature Center has been giving our community a place to play and learn about the unique environment of the high plains for nearly 30 years this year. We steward 640 acres of native prairie with over 6 miles of trails formerly part of the Frying Pan Ranch, centered around Wildcat Bluff, an 80 foot sandstone bluff, that gives visitors not only a great view of the surrounding country but also the history of millennia of geology as well as animal and human habitation.

In addition to our miles of rustic trails, we also have Libb's Trail, 5 acres of paved and accessible trails with a pond and stream, Dino Dig Pit and our pavilion area as well as picnic areas for relaxing or taking a break after a good long hike.

We serve thousands of students each year through school field trips and our partner organizations, giving them the opportunity to see and interact with the area in which they live in a whole new way. Your donation dollars go directly to helping the children of the panhandle and beyond learn to care about the natural world they call home. We've learned that children grow to care about the ins they know and knowing why it's important to help see the land and its ecology is an important step in growing to care about your home and keep it safe.

We've seen an uptick in hikers this year with COVID concerns encouraging our friends and neighbors to spend more time outside where social distancing is easier and kids can run and play and try their skills in an environment that teaches a love of the land and all the amazing things they can do.

We're honored to be supported by our community and when you give through The Panhandle Gives your dollars go even farther with amplification dollars from community sponsors to support nature programs and education. As we know, we take care of the things we love, please help us continue the tradition of families and students learning about their environment so Wildcat Bluff can keep encouraging an appreciation of the land we all love!
