Blank Spaces Murals

Blank Spaces Murals has made a significant impact in the Texas Panhandle since 2019, creating 110 public murals while operating a crucial youth development program. They have provided over 65 paid internships to local students to help fund their post-secondary education goals. Beyond wages, BSM leverages public art to offer valuable resources like hot meals, job training, mentorship, and career connections, ensuring the interns gain essential skills for future success.

This year, Blank Spaces Murals and 2892 Miles to Go are collaborating with the National Geographic Society, Visit Amarillo, Center City, and the City of Amarillo on the "66 Stories from Route 66" initiative. This certified, multi-generational community project is focused on collecting the living history of Amarillo's Route 66 corridor in preparation for the 2026 Centennial. The initiative pairs adult storytellers with paid youth fellows to document lost stories, preserve local history, and invest in the future of the Mother Road. The final outcome will include an interactive Story Map featuring audio/visual recordings and narratives, alongside a massive mural located on Route 66 between downtown Amarillo and Historic 6th Street.

Overall, Blank Spaces primary goal is to invest in the youth of our area by offering greater access to the Creative Arts. The local non-profit provides opportunities for young artists to install large-scale murals, curate and manage a local art gallery while leading efforts to contribute to civic beautification in Amarillo and surrounding communities. Interns in the program work alongside professional artists to develop all aspects of mural painting including working with clients/property owners, idea generation, design conception, materials, application, budget and preservation. They are taught to collaborate with other artists, neighborhood residents, children from diverse schools and cultural backgrounds and giving back to our community to grow skills and work in “real world” artistic endeavors.

Through this program young artists are receiving the skills, leadership and training support necessary to pursue a wide range of creative-based employment and post-secondary educational opportunities.  Blank Spaces promotes the vital and essential need for the Arts in the development and enrichment of a more analytical, well balanced and socially aware young person. By investing in area students, the organization is cultivating the ecology and importance of the Arts in the Texas Panhandle.
