Wellington Opportunity Center, Inc. (WOCI) was established in 1995 as a youth activity program offering After School Program and Summer Enrichment Programs for youth in Collingsworth County. After school programs aim to provide a safe, nurturing place for youth to receive a healthy after school meal while they focus on extended learning and growth activities, including homework/academic needs, character building skills and developing healthy relationships. Summer enrichment programs offer an avenue for school aged youth to participate in well-structured, supervised activities four days a week. Hands-on learning experiences and educational activities increase opportunities for improved self-esteem, positive achievement and the ability to get along with others.
A major component of each program offered through the WOCI is the availability of a nutritious meal and/or snack for each participant. The WOCI identifies poverty as a barrier toward the success of youth and families and attempts to address poverty, along with the many other barriers facing smooth transitions from youth to positive adulthood. The After School Program and Summer Program include a prepared meal for all participants and “carry over Snack Pack Bundle" for each participant to take home at the end of each week and during non-school or program time. The WOCI is committed to ensuring every youth participant has a healthy meal during each day of WOCI activities. Since 1995, through generous contributions, all programs offered through WOCI have been available to all youth participants at no cost to the participants.
